Super Estates – Pace and Space but At a Price

New car sales according to the Guardian are continuing to grow, with figures for July proving they have risen for the 16th month in a row. Backed by strong finance products and some great deals it seems that our love affair with new cars is strengthening once more. Fancy a new car then? Well how about really going for it and looking at one of the breed of super fast estate cars on offer. Estates used to be big, lumbering, boxy things that were far from pretty. But not anymore – there have now been a number of super estates on the market for a few years, but the range of cars with pace as well as space just seems to keep increasing. Perhaps not known for their incredible economy, they are all stunning to look at. Take a look at two top picks from the German stable.

Audi RS6 Avant

This luxurious and large estate actually weighs nearly two tonnes but can accelerate quicker than a Porsche Cayman S. Currently in its third generation, the RS6 is a brilliant solution for a lot of people. It has a twin turbo and a four litre V8 engine – slightly smaller than its predecessor but still with plenty of torque. As standard you get an automatic eight-speed gearbox and permanent four-wheel drive.

Its price point for some is slightly eye watering at over £20,000 more than the S6 and more than double the price of an entry level A6 Avant. However for many the price tag of around £77,000 is worth it and there’s no mistaking the RS6 for its cheaper brothers – bespoke bumpers, wider wheel arches, more metallic trim and 20-inch alloys see to that. Practicality of owning means you may need to shop around or even book in somewhere more off the beaten track to get a good deal – car service in Truro anyone? Drive-wise you get good handling and the electronics and suspension manage to hide the fact that it is so large and heavy.

Mercedes Benz E63 AMG

This estate claims to offer the best in practicality and speed and sits squarely alongside its German stablemates. Its boot is cavernous and in spite of the overall size of the Mercedes its twin turbo V8 is super quick off the mark. For many, if you have the means to purchase one of these new super estates you probably have the means to look after it, but it can still be worth your time shopping around for a decent priced Mercedes service.

As you would expect for a Mercedes, the E63 AMG has a very high spec and features a number of styling additions, including five spoke 19-inch alloys, a sculpted rear and front bumper and chrome trim. It manages to sound like a muscle car with a low rumbling from the exhaust and the ride quality (although quite firm from sports suspension) is great for those who enjoy a performance car. It manages to reach 0-62mph in an amazing 4.3 seconds and has a top speed of around 155 mph.
